Amethyst gemstones, a royal favorite, are currently mined at the amethyst mine in Arizona.
The name amethyst is believed to have been derived from the Greek word meaning" not drunken" and was worn as an amulet against drunkenness. Other historians suggest that the Greeks were referring to the almost wine-like color of Amethyst, which is why wine goblets were often carved from it! Today, the amethyst still symbolizes sobriety.
