Malachite is responsible for the green color of tarnished copper and bronze. The colors in the beautiful and always irregular bands range from a light green to a very deep green.
A popular theory surrounding the name is that the word malachite comes from Greek "malhe," which means grass and "malakos" which means soft. Malachite is a semi-precious stone and is formed from copper containing solutions in or near copper ore deposits. Malachite is responsible for the green color of tarnished copper and bronze.
