Persian legend says that the heavens owed
their blue color to a massive slab of lapis upon which the earth rested. It was believed to be a sacred stone,
and was buried with the dead to guide them in the afterlife. In some cultures, lapis lazuli was formed into the
shape an eye and worn as a "power amulet."
