The stone, which ranges from light blue to gray-green, is usually interspersed with brown, dark gray, or black veins of other minerals or the host rock. Red Coral used as a gem material is a branching skeleton-like structure produced by small marine animals. Mother of pearl comes from the inner layer of mollusk and snail shells which produce an iridescent play of color. Sea shells were once used as money in many parts of the world.
