O The Greeks thought that opals bestowed powers of foresight and prophecy. Eastern
cultures regarded it as sacred, and Arabs believed opal fell from heaven. In the Elizabethan period,, opals spawned
great and often dark superstitions. Even the name’s origin is a mystery. Some gemologists trace the name to the
latin opalus, which means "seeing," others site the Greek work opallios which means "to see a change
of color."
O An opal called orphanus was set in the crown of the Holy Roman Emperor, and they
were also used in the crown jewels of France.. The Arabs of Mohammed's time were fans of the gem, and further north,
fair-haired girls in Germany and Scandinavia were encouraged to wear opal pins in their hair to protect them from
freezing rain, and wind. Truly an international gem! |
