Freshwater mussels sometimes produce a pearl.
When an irritant, such as a grain of sand, gets inside the mussel's shell, the mantle creates mother-of-pearl,
which coats the sand over and over, thus creating a pearl. The pearl has a beautiful luster and comes in colors
as varied as the more common white and silver, and as exotic as brown or purple.
